How to choose
What we’d tell a friend before they buy. Take the numbers with you — or bring them in and we’ll walk the floor with you.
- 01
Fit the desk to your body
With your shoulders relaxed, elbows should bend at about 90° with forearms resting on the desk. Most people land at a 28–30 inch desk with an adjustable chair doing the fine-tuning.
- Feet flat — add a footrest if not
- Top of the screen at or just below eye level
- Leave 36 inches behind the desk to roll the chair out
- 02
Light from the side
Put the desk perpendicular to the window when you can. Light from the side means no glare on the screen and no squinting into a bright window on video calls.
- Add a task lamp on the side opposite your writing hand
- Avoid placing the screen with a window directly behind it
- Warm bulbs for evening work, cooler for daytime focus
- 03
Storage that closes
Open shelves look great in photos; closed storage keeps a working room calm. A mix is ideal — display on top, files and cables behind doors.
- Measure your printer and file boxes before choosing
- Bookcases over 5 feet should be anchored to the wall
- Lift-top and L-shape desks earn their keep in small rooms
