How to choose
What we’d tell a friend before they buy. Take the numbers with you — or bring them in and we’ll walk the floor with you.
- 01
Size the bed to the room, not the other way round
A king in a 10 × 11 foot room leaves no room to walk. As a rule, keep at least 24 inches on both sides and at the foot of the bed, and 36 inches in front of any dresser so drawers can open with you standing there.
- Queen works in rooms from about 10 × 10 ft
- King is comfortable from about 12 × 12 ft
- Tape the footprint on the floor before you decide
- 02
Headboard height sets the mood
Tall upholstered headboards feel like a hotel and make low ceilings look higher. Low panel beds feel calmer and let a window above the bed breathe. Check that the headboard clears any window sill or outlet.
- Measure sill height if the bed goes under a window
- Upholstered headboards are best for reading in bed
- Storage beds trade drawer space for under-bed airflow
- 03
Nightstands: height first
Your nightstand top should land within an inch or two of the top of your mattress. Too low and you are reaching down in the dark; too high and the lamp shines in your eyes.
- Measure mattress height after the new bed and foundation
- Drawers hide clutter; open shelves are easier to dust
- Leave room for a lamp, a glass and a phone
- 04
Buy the set, or build the room
Matching sets are easy and always look intentional. Mixing is more personal — keep one thing consistent (wood tone, hardware finish or silhouette) so the room still feels pulled together.
- Repeat one finish at least three times in the room
- Contrast a wood bed with painted nightstands, or vice versa
- Mirrors over dressers bounce light from the window
